About our HOVE Yurt Enjoy the calm and feel of the ‘real’ Hawaii! The best weather on the Big Island is here in Ocean View. Generally clear mornings, possible afternoon showers; lows of 50 in the winter, 60 in the summer with year round highs in the low 80’s! Sit on the couch with the French doors open and enjoy the finches and cardinals that swarm the bird feeder! Or sit on the deck under the big umbrella and cruise the web! If you go to the beach, rinse off at the upper deck’s solar shower! The yurt is 24’ in diameter, giving you 452 sf to enjoy! A full kitchen (no dishwasher!) with an Asian computer armoire and wireless internet adjoins the living room with wood stove, oriental carpets and TV credenza with a flat screen and DVD/VCR. The bedroom has a Tempurpedic type queen bed, down comforter, HTC linens, vintage Hawaiian details and yes, a closet. The bathroom has a tub and shower, as well as the usual amenities! There is a washing machine on the deck and an adjacent clothesline. Appliances run on electricity or propane. Water is from a catchment, and enters the house via a water pump. We have wonderful drinking water from our local Ace Hardware store in 5 gallon bottles. There is wireless hi-speed internet, DISH TV and a real telephone. The feel of the yurt is a blend of vintage Hawaii, with lovingly collected Hawaiiana décor, mingled with authentic imported Uzbeki and Mongolian yurt wall hangings, antique Oriental rugs and furniture pieces brought from China and Great Britain. The color scheme is vivid; reds, yellows and black! Ocean View has a small commercial area, frequented by people who really LIVE in Hawaii - -not just tourists! It’s great fun mingling with the locals! The aloha spirit abounds here. The variety in people is soup to nuts. You will be conveniently located half-way between Kailua and Hilo! You are 45 minutes, an easy drive, to Volcano National Park. The Black Sand Beach, lovely Naalehu, Green Sand Beach, South Point and many other unique destinations are within a few minutes (15 or 20) drive. In January we saw whales right off the beach near the Black Sand Beach, and the dolphins were swimming with us as we kayaked in Kealakekua Bay with its historicCaptain Cook monument. The dolphins were so close to me I could hear them snorting and snuffling when they came up for air! And staying in a yurt! The wood lattice and rafters envelopes you in its arms – you can lie in bed at night and see the moon and stars through the skylight. It’s heavenly! Our acre has many tropical and exotic plants. If you’re lucky, the bananas, loquats, tomatoes or papayas will be ripe and ready to pick. The bananas and tomatoes are probably the smallest you’ve ever seen in your life and taste fabulous!
